History

Donald Whitney started his arboriculture career working for Goodall in 1965 and worked there until 1969 at which time he and his brother Fred started, Whitney Brothers, Inc. The Main focus of the company was tree pruning and removal. The Major work equipment included chain saws, climbing gear an old log loader and a one-ton dump truck.

In 1975 Fred Whitney left to pursue other opportunities. Don carried on the company for many years and expanded into other lines of Arboricultural work. In 1983 the company was incorporated as Whitney Tree Service, Inc. At the time there were 2-3 employees and an office in Don's home.

In 1986 Terry Traver purchased 50% of the stock and began a new phase of expansion and development. New and modern equipment was added to the fleet and many talented employees joined the rank and file. Services today include Integrated Pest Management, Elm Preservation, Consulting, Urban Forestry and a complete line of Arboricultural Services.

On November 1, 1997 Terry sold his share of the business back to Don and moved to New Jersey to explore new opportunities. At that time David MacDonald an employee of Dons since 1984 worked with Don to help manage the company and took on consulting responsibilities.

On January 1, 2002 David and Thedy MacDonald bought out Whitney Tree Service and Don began his retirement

In 2010 Thedy and David built two new buildings and moved the buiness to 58 MacDonald Drive in New Gloucester.

“About a month ago, we had a massive section of pine break off during a windstorm and come down on our house and total our car. The crew from Whitney responded immediately to our call and came within 24 hours of us scheduling an appointment. The crew was GREAT, joked with me about it (which we completely needed) and got up onto the roof to help us see what damage was done. All in all, they were here and gone within an hour. Will be reaching out to WTS when we work on getting some of the other trees close to the house trimmed.”
